Statement from the Kentucky Association for College Admission Counseling (KYACAC)

December 10, 2025

The Kentucky Association for College Admission Counseling (KYACAC) is heartbroken by the recent shooting at Kentucky State University. Our thoughts are with the KSU students, families, faculty, staff, alumni, and the entire Thorobred community as they navigate the trauma, fear, and uncertainty caused by this violence.

As an organization committed to supporting students’ access to safe, transformative, and equitable educational opportunities, we firmly believe that every learner deserves an environment where their well-being is protected and their potential can flourish. Violence that disrupts learning and threatens belonging strikes at the core of our mission.

KYACAC’s mission and vision call us to advocate for college access for all students, to promote inclusive and student-centered educational environments, and to uphold the values of connection, collaboration, and care across Kentucky’s educational landscape. Today, that mission includes standing in solidarity with Kentucky State University and reaffirming our commitment to supporting institutions as they work to ensure the physical, emotional, and academic safety of their students.

We also acknowledge that incidents like this have a ripple effect across campuses, counseling offices, high schools, and communities throughout the Commonwealth. KYACAC members play a crucial role in supporting students during moments of crisis. We encourage educators, counselors, and admission professionals to offer compassion, accurate information, and the stability that our students need as they process this event.

As one of two HBCUs in Kentucky, KSU holds a profound and irreplaceable role in expanding access and opportunity for students across the Commonwealth. We stand with KSU in affirming that campuses must remain places of safety, scholarship, and hope, and we join partners across Kentucky in calling for resources, prevention efforts, and community supports that protect all students.

We extend our deepest care to the KSU community and remain committed to walking alongside them in the days and months ahead.
